The IBCC comprises a multidisciplinary team of professionals, in which each member is hyper-specialized in the approach to breast cancer and excels in their medical-scientific practice and in patient care.

Dr. Javier Cortés Castán

Founder and director of the IBCC

Dr. Javier Cortés Castán is a leading oncologist of international renown in the research and treatment of breast cancer.

He is the author of more than 300 international publications, especially on breast cancer, and is the only Spanish person to have had two publications in the journal CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians, the medical journal with the highest impact factor in the world. He has also given more than 600 talks at various international congresses.

He has been very actively involved in clinical trials which have led to the approval of seven new treatments for metastatic breast cancer in Europe over the last decade, and is heavily engaged in research into treating this type of tumour, especially the triple-negative and HER2-positive subtypes. He is a member of more than 150 scientific projects related to this disease, with a leadership position in many of them.

He is a reviewer of several top medical journals, such as New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, Lancet Oncology, Annals of Oncology and Journal of Clinical Oncology, among many others.

He is also an active member of the Spanish, European and American Societies of Medical Oncology (SEOM, ESMO, ASCO). In addition, he is a member of the Scientific Committee of the European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO); he was chair for breast cancer at the ESMO Congress 2020, and co-chair of the same section at the 2020 American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) congress, and also in the area of immunotherapy at the AACR 2021 congress.

Dr. José Manuel Pérez

Deputy Director

Degree in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Murcia in 2004 with a grade of Outstanding. Doctor of Medicine from the Autonomous University of Barcelona in 2015.

He completed his residency in Medical Oncology at the Vall d’Hebrón Hospital between 2005 and 2009, and worked as a Medical Oncology consultant in the Breast Cancer Unit and in the Research Unit for Molecular Therapy (UITM) of the same hospital until April 2016.

Subsequently, he worked as Head of Service and Director of the Clinical Trials Unit at the IOB Institute of Oncology at Quirónsalud Barcelona Hospital until September 2020.

He is the principal investigator and co-investigator of multiple clinical trials in patients with breast cancer, and the author of more than 60 publications on this pathology in indexed journals.

He is currently a member of the European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO), the Spanish Society of Medical Oncology (SEOM) and the breast cancer Cooperative Groups, SOLTI and GEICAM.

Dr. Laia Garrigós

Oncologist

Degree in Medicine and Surgery from the Rovira i Virgili University in 2003. Doctoral Research Complement (official Master’s in applied medical science): Master’s thesis 2012-2013. Title: Correlation between radiological response and pathological response in breast cancer patients treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Doctoral thesis in Medicine: Influence of clinical, radiological and pathological factors in the assessment of response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy in breast cancer. Under the supervision of Dr. Ignasi Tusquets and Dr. Servitja. Tutor: Dr. Adolf Diez. Read on 28-09-2017.

Specialist in Medical Oncology, trained via MIR between 2005 and 2009 at the Hospital del Mar, Barcelona. Medical Oncology consultant at the Hospital del Mar from May 2009 to April 2016 (head of gynaecological tumours and co-head of breast cancer). Consultant for the breast cancer unit at the Vall d’Hebron Hospital from May 2016 to October 2020.
